In 2016, the World Teachers’ Day focused on the theme “Valuing the teachers, improve their professional status.” The year 2016 was also the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the ILO / UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This recommendation adopted in 1966 formulates the rights and responsibilities of teachers as well as international standards for their training, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions. Since its adoption, the Recommendation has been considered an important set of guidelines to promote teachers’ status in the interest of quality education.
In the field of social protection, the declaration states that all teachers, regardless of the type of school, should enjoy the same social security protection.
It was also the first World Teachers’ Day, following the adoption by the international community of the Education 2030 Framework for Action, a new global agenda for education.
